Mt. Healthy Schools Hosts Interactive Medical Detectives Event Mt. Healthy Schools proudly hosted an engaging and educational event as part of its Medical Detectives program. Students took on the role of medical investigators as they interviewed and diagnosed patients (staff volunteers) with various simulated diseases. The event, organized by Teacher Christina Lanning, aimed to showcase the students' skills in deductive reasoning, interdisciplinary collaboration, and medical decision-making. Patients were assigned one of fifteen diseases from the school's disease dictionary and participated in interviews during their plan bells or available time slots throughout the day. We were thrilled to see our students in action, applying their classroom learning to real-world scenarios, the Medical Detectives program not only fosters critical thinking but also highlights the importance of communication and teamwork in healthcare settings. Participants in the event received a script outlining their "current symptoms" and a paragraph containing key clues, along with red herrings strategically placed to challenge the students' diagnostic abilities. The students, in turn, asked predetermined questions based on the scripts, simulating a professional medical interview process. It's incredible to see how our students utilize their skills across disciplines to arrive at accurate diagnoses, they demonstrated exceptional professionalism and empathy throughout the interviews. As part of the simulation, students had the opportunity to "order lab tests" to confirm their diagnoses, providing them with a hands-on experience in medical decision-making. Additionally, they inquired about patients' preferred pharmacies in case a prescription needed to be ordered as part of the diagnosis process.
